As Principal Sean Wong concludes his 11-year tenure at President Theodore Roosevelt High School, our Makiki-Punchbowl community has much to celebrate. Among his many accomplishments, perhaps none stands more visibly as a symbol of vision, partnership, and perseverance than the school’s beautiful new gymnasium.
This facility is far more than a place for basketball games, pep rallies, and athletic competitions. It is a gathering place where students, families, alumni, and neighbors can come together to celebrate achievements, strengthen friendships, and build community.
The new gym also reflects an important commitment to resilience and preparedness. Designed to modern standards, the facility can serve as a hurricane-resistant shelter and community refuge during times of emergency. In a state where natural disasters can affect all of us, this gym represents both hope and security—a place where the Roosevelt community can gather not only in moments of celebration, but also in times of need.

This achievement would not have been possible without the collective efforts of RHS alums who played key roles: first, congratulations to Principal Sean Wong for his leadership and steadfast commitment to Roosevelt’s futures, to architect John Takeuchi for transforming a vision into an inspiring and functional space, to former State Senator Taniguchi for his perseverance in obtaining funding for the project, to Athletic Director John Chung and his coaching staff, and to student athletes, supporters and community advocates whose collaboration made this project a reality.
Great schools are built not only with bricks and mortar, but with shared purpose and a belief in future generations. The new Roosevelt High School gymnasium stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when a community works together. It is a gift to today’s students and a legacy that will serve Hawaiʻi for decades to come.
